Romsey Town v Hamworthy United
Sydenhams League Cup 1st Round
Tuesday 10th September 2019
United, having started the season well but just going a little off the boil of late, were now in Sydenhams League Cup action at the Bypass ground. The Hammers' greatest achievement to date in fact came when winning this competition in 2005, and they only failed to make the final last season on a penalty shoot out. Their hosts compete in Sydenhams League One, one level below that of the Hammers, lying in mid-table with three wins and two defeats from their five league games.
The Hammers, on top in the early stages, edged in front on 15 minutes. Ollie Davis won a free kick near the corner flag. Ash Pope took it, and managed to beat the Romsey keeper at his near post, the ball just creeping over the line. About half an hour in, however, Romsey took control for long spells.
With the hosts playing well in the second half, it was against the run of play that United's second goal came on 72 minutes. A counter attack down the left side resulted in Harry Cooper jumping unopposed at the far post, and he managed to head the ball home just inside the opposite post.
United managed to see out the victory in what was a good game of football. The Town though probably deserved better, having drawn visiting stopper Sam Jones into two good saves, and Jamie Filkins having to clear a ball off the line. The Hammers now progress to the second round in which they host Alresford Town.
